Crop Residue Calculator Helps Producers with Feed Costs South Dakota State University. www3.sdstate.edu Brookings, South Dakota (May 9, 2008)--A crop residue fertilizer calculator can help producers weighing high-priced fertilizer and the cost of removing crop residues for livestock use.
Don Guthmiller, marketing and farm management educator, developed the calculator based on SDSU plant science research conducted from 2004 to 2006. The research looked at corn stalks, soybean residue, and wheat straw in fields. Using the calculator, a producer enters the current fertilizer costs per ton, and it figures the loss of fertilizer value due to crop residue removal based on crop yield. Producers then can add costs of putting up and hauling the crop residue to arrive at a total cost. The calculator is available at the SDSU Department of Economics Web site, econ.sdstate.edu. Choose "Extension" and then pick the "Management Tools and Links" choice in the drop-down menu. Contact: |
